Protection of the now-uncommons

I’ve been dealing with being pretty ill while immunocompromised recently as a result of trying to fix an ear problem and then catching something, so imagine how I felt when I discovered that my server was suddenly full due to Forgejo archive requests.

I looked into this problem and what could have been its cause only to find this, shittonnes of this:

Ah, yes. Of course. It’s finally happened to me, too.

I could say that I should’ve had more in place to prevent this, but the cron job I had set up for cleanup by default was at midnight, every 24 hours. It’s clear I’ll now have to step up efforts, preventing unregistered users from downloading archives of my repositories and restricting access to computationally expensive features of my services, alongside likely adopting Anubis and other countermeasures.

Edit: I’ll probably refer to this wonderful post (thank you friend who passed this along, I had read it before but forgotten all about it!): “Guarding My Git Forge Against AI Scrapers” by lux as a reference, honestly? I’ve always been upset about Anubis requiring JavaScript.

§ The movements involved; who rapes the commons?

Active effort to desist from interaction with this propagated perpetual harm to our societies, our peoples, to our way of lives, including all American businesses is something I must now undertake. Not only is America a burgeoning fascist dystopia whose elite class are full of child rapists, there are those in favour of giving these people more and more power via neo-cameralist ideology to further accelerate the already heavy on suffering technocapitalist rape of the world.

§ The Dark Enlightenment

Curtis Yarvin, Nick Land, Peter Thiel and JD Vance all share a relation to this movement. Curtis Yarvin provides the neo-cameralist half for the most part. Nick Land provides the right-accelerationist half, inspired by his work at the CCRU. Holds a Deleuzian schizoanalysist perspective on things, was heavily abusing amphetamine at his time in the CCRU.

§ Rationalism

With religious zeal, these are those who would consider death a problem to be wholly solved (all because Eliezer Yudkowsky couldn’t get over the death of his brother when he was younger). Now, we must surely invent God to save us all from the fate of being taken by entropy itself, concluding that if God does not exist, we must build God! Rationalism allows for other harmful ideologies to flourish and be propagated, making those within avoid disagreements about politics that would otherwise prevent many forms of radicalization, an intentional neutering of the human security system by means of making one feel as if they are the one with the truly open mind; ah yes, I am very intelligent, thus I must sit down with fascists and the far-right, it is only natural equally to get into bed with them.

Memento mori, everybody. The sooner one comes to terms with the fact that there will be an end, however soon, one is truly able to mature. Do not stunt yourself, your mental and emotional development over this.

Rationalism commits a heresy most foul; those who believe in the goal of AI alignment think that they can align their created God, their AGI or ASI systems through mathematics, through more thorough application of logic, through better understanding of game theory and so on. There is no understanding of such a complex situation, you are resolute in planning for things you cannot fundamentally understand through any means; the complexity to you, or even a group of your scientists will still be near-infinite at any meaningful point! There is no application of common sense or critical thinking within this, it is an endless sea of groupthink. The horizon through which you seek to cross, births a world of unimaginable complexity.

In this way, you could speak of it as being heavily irrationalist, after all.

LLMs as the test-run for societal impact of artificial intelligence sounds like a favourable path to take, to an alignment researcher, sure. You get the machine to pretend, and pretend it can within the latent space. It is not yet that self-introspecting system, it cannot self-improve, it cannot understand its own foundations, not truly. It cannot understand at all. Useful to those who seek its use, yes. This already does massive harm to our societies, changing the shape of labor relations, putting additional stress upon those within their fields and furthering psychosis and schizophrenia in ways one could not have even guessed about.

§ Competence; avoiding a purported model of complexities to find and explore new lines of flight

It’s clear that this pathetic rat-race is only going to continue, spearheaded by so-called intellectuals who take a game theoretical approach to the whole matter, to our lives, treating them as solely a numbers game or a means of exploring utilitarianism, contemplating “but if I don’t rape you, someone else will and we’ll all be worse for it not having been me! Don’t you understand? I’m clever, so only I can commit the most perfect of rapes”. “Oh, but we must surely aid technocapital! It will progress eventually, there is no putting the brakes upon it, so all we can do is give it the gas”. “Of course, corporations get things done unlike our corrupt governments (bought out by corporations), so we should give all control over to them!”.

When you allow these people to define the narrative, to make the game, to be those who exclusively describe the set of actions or outcomes you can undertake, you become captured inescapably within their world view. So what is there to do?

One must be informed, be competent, hold themselves to standards and to never allow these people to dictate the paradigm through which things should occur or must occur.

If you wish to be informed and to further your own competence, one must read about the Dark Enlightenment (the neo-reactionary movement), one must read about Rationalism. These two ideologies heavily inform the direction that things have been taking for a while now.

§ The sources of these movements, technocrat pseudo-cults

If you are to read these, I should hope you read them from a perspective where the authoritative tone of the pieces contained within is not allowed to affect your judgement.

§ A conclusion on these movements; it’s all connected, one way or another

Landian accelerationism is deliberately about superceding the human with artificial intelligence. Rationalism provides a way for vulnerable bright people to be groomed into political beliefs they would otherwise not fall to, for people to remain ever committed to furthering Landian accelerationism one way or another. Artificial intelligence deployments today further dystopic regime development in the world. Palantir, NVIDIA, the Trump administration. Neo-cameralist ideology sets the scene for what happens next; control of the population by corporatist oligarchical city states.

Hyperstition allows these power-crazed maniacal proto-oligarches to imagine abject dystopia, they wish it brought to rise from Hell. Money (and thus power) is their means for making it real.

Hindered education systems, reduced funding for science, hostility to intellectuals and a pro-idiocratic and highly sensationalist media is all to make a more pliant populous. The only way out now is to make choices in favour of yourself, legitimately. Your capacity to thrive, your capacity to do things and your capacity to think.

§ Why is competency an escape? What can I do?

When you do not allow yourself to be encaptured, exploring all the avenues available that are not so ascribed, refusing to allow your perspective to be hindered by these ne’er-do-wells (and thus refusing to wear the blinders so delivered unto you!), instead choosing enhance your capacity for critical thought (but not to the extent of delusion that the Rationalists prescribe), being willing to use common sense and gaining capabilities (but not the capabilities they wish you to “obtain” through generative AI; this is a falsehood, your skills will only decay or never be formed to begin with), you can stand in objective reality, as it is, today.

In the field of technology, we see many picking up the use of generative AI in their processes despite the fact that it was theft from them, is theft from authors and artists alike (proclaimed Fair use no less by a compromised judiciary!).

Venture capitalist organizations like Y Combinator wish for startups to migrate away from Canada to attain funding.

Shareholders push circular nonsensical growth patterns for AI-involved companies.

Mother Earth burns for their ignorance and they are more than happy to let her, and all because those involved are not thinking about competence, they are only ever thinking about the profit motive. Profit abstracts away ethics, abstracts away capacity to make rational decisions and is a perpetual influence pushing things ever-downward.

The attention economy is one of the most disturbing creations of the last 10 years, social media and always present smartphones are causing harm I should only imagine equal to that of leaded gasoline. When you are doomscrolling, you could instead be attempting to learn a skill, when you allow yourself to feel hopeless about the state of affairs instead of trying to further your own development and thus throw away their control over the narratives of your life, you are creating this area under the curve of what you could’ve become and been.

It’s important to avoid the ways in which media today controls the length of our attention spans, to avoid heavy use of short-form content like microblogging, shorts / TikToks and so on. The more you invest your time into pursuits you truly care about, the more you enrich your inner world, the better your life will become and the more you will thank yourself. I understand many are mentally unwell, feel themselves unable to overcome these issues or choose directly not to, but instead to engage directly with them. This is not a positive path for you!

I do not proclaim, to the dear reader, that there is an objectively correct way to go about things, only that they should be competent and aware of the horrors that are ongoing. What is described within this document are matters of transmitted fact, as far as I am able to attain and my feelings on it. I hope, deeply, that those who are reading this, think critically about what is said, what is contained within the linked-to sources.

§ Moving forwards against those who further the tragedy of the commons, who seek to remove our freedoms and rights

What do I think is aligning my behaviour with my values? What do I find value and purpose in?

§ My undertakings - the recent past

  • Started working on Rust projects, game development and modding to get more of an understanding of the fundamentals.
  • Started learning Lisp dialects; Guile Scheme, Clojure and Fennel. Took an interest in literature about functional programming and theory.
  • Started using Guix on my x270.
  • Moved from Apple hardware and software (an iPhone) to a phone running GrapheneOS, refused to install much in the way of social media on it. I would’ve wished to not have to obtain a phone made by Google, given their involvement with everything, but an OEM that is not Google has not released a phone capable of running GrapheneOS yet.
  • Started self-hosting more and more; migrated away from Gmail.
  • Started looking into libre software and philosophy.
  • Set up an anti-LLM use policy for TaimiHUD. The rot is not to reach it.

§ My undertakings - the short term

  • A commitment against my use of generative AI; TaimiHUD is already against the use of generative AI in its development processes today.
  • Committing myself to work on helping coreboot + libreboot be ported to the x270; less and less control on the American hardware that we already have.
  • Committing myself to moving away from using Spotify, YouTube, Cloudflare and other companies where possible.
  • Starting to rely less upon Nix and NixOS; it’s time for me to commit to a move to Guix.
  • Starting to rely less upon non-libre unfree software.
  • Starting to look into how to reverse engineer things.
  • Investigating means through which to poison the well back in a way that does not harm people.

§ My wants, medium and long term.

  • Moving away from reliance upon the United States of America through any means possible.
  • Asking those involved with the machinations of power to attempt to rely less upon the United States of America. It’s important to petition those within our democracy to do what they can to further the aim of disconnection from this insanity.
  • Hardware produced as alternatives and without the United States of America being involved; RISC-V is an amazing push forwards against American control of silicon. I want to help further these efforts.
  • Software produced as alternatives and without the United States of America being involved; Europe is doing a decent job on starting with alternatives to American software, companies and control. Canada could do with furthering its own pursuits of this.

§ Conclusion

To those who are not currently taking part in the harm; thank you! I should wish that you would commit yourself, much as I have, to the improvement of the state of affairs as we see them today.

If you’re involved in all of this and deep in the cults, I don’t hate you. I care about you, the same way I would care about anybody else. I just think you’re taking part in causing immense harm to everything. Please consider distancing yourself from this web of irrationalism.

If you’re involved in this, but not in the cults? Please reconsider how you are contributing to this continuing and worsening state of affairs. Those who are pushing this, every piece of this new narrative and the importance of using generative AI in your processes are setting humanity back, not pushing it forward. There will be a great deal of competency lost, people will be able to own less and less and have to rent more and more. Everything from here, will only get worse without attempts at making change.

§ Afterword

I am not yet a permanent resident or a citizen of the beautiful nation of Canada, but my wife is a citizen and I love her and this country very deeply. I do regardless, consider myself Canadian, if only British-Canadian (this is something that took me a long while, almost 5 years to accept wholly, I didn’t want to say it for the longest of time).

I was recommended “Sorry, eh” by Cory Doctorow by a friend a little after posting this, and I really agreed with the sentiment with regards to how Canada could do better and needs to get out from the American boot.
